It’s a great time for hip-hop, there are more emcees getting back to putting out intelligent lyrics to feed your brain over production that warms your soul while breaking your neck. There was a time when it seemed impossible for someone to be as dope on the mic as they were on the boards; that time has changed. Jersey’s Voli is a very gifted individual and I believe he is one of the people that will change the game and steer hip-hop in a positive path for the future. If you haven’t heard his “Glass Doors” sampler yet, you need to! Trust me. Here he is to let yall know more.
Name: VoliHow’d you come up with that name?
Voli is short for Volatile which was my rapper/producer name from a while back. Voli is just a catchier, lighter alias.
Where are you from?
Parsippany, New Jersey. The Burbs.
How do you think being from Jersey has influenced you?
I was born and raised there, so up until my late teens I never really left the state. I wouldn’t say Jersey has influenced me as much as being from the northeast as a whole. I was deeply influenced by an east coast style of rapping during high school. So, it formed one of the foundations of my musical ear.
How long have you been rhyming?
Since freshman year of high school. So about 13 years. Took a few years off in that time, but that’s a decent estimate.
What makes you different or stand out from everyone else?
Well, at this point, it’s because I’m very lyrical, but also, ironically, because I’m so normal. I’m just a working guy from the suburbs. Someone who went to college, got a job, and wants to quit, hah.
I produce and engineer my own stuff, so I’d like to think of myself as pretty independent. I also songwrite and produce other artists of all types of genres.
But there’s much more that makes me stand out which will become more visible as I put more music out.
How would you describe your style?
Innovative, down to earth, inspirational, epic.
What are your inspirations?
Art within life in general. Perspective. Initiative.
Musically speaking: Kanye, Jay-Z, Cudi, Cee Lo, Timbaland to name a few of many. I’m all over the place.
What do you hope to accomplish with the Glass Doors sampler?
I feel like I’ve already accomplished it. It was my introduction to the world as an artist. In the future, it’ll serve as a reference point for fans.
How did you link you with J.Cole? Elite? Omen?
Online, our history goes way back to the 90’s. We’ve maintained that friendship spanning over a decade.
Do you think yall would ever put out a group or album?
Sure. We actually had planned to do that back in the day but it didn’t work out timing wise. Couldn’t say what kind of project it would be but something I’m sure.
What are your upcoming projects or future goals?
Too many to list, but in the immediate future, gain more fans, make a lot of incredible music and share it with the people. I also want to share some of my work as a producer/songwriter for other artists as well. In any case, a big objective is to get a deal, funding. Something that will really allow me to really take off musically.
If you could change something about current hip-hop, what would it be?
Nothing really. The internet has created such a great movement of independence both from up and coming artists and their listeners. The people are directly deciding what they wanna hear. As a result, there is such a variety of creative music emerging. Variety is all I could ever ask for in anything, not just in hip hop.
How important do you think DJs are to hip-hop?
Extremely. They are a permanent component of the culture. They’re the messengers of the art.
What do you think of the current mixtape game?
I think it’s great. It’s become so competitive that it’s wild. Since there’s so much free music available, you have to be on your game to get a download and then consistently get those clicks.
Besides the people you work with, who are you currently listening to?
Kanye is getting the most plays from me right now. Other than that, no one consistently. I had musical ADD.
Who’s someone you’d like to collab with, that you haven’t yet?
Wow. Kid Cudi. Cee Lo. Justice. There are so many but I just want to work with people that are just left field with their music. It’s a challenge, adds a new element to the music.
What’s on your mind/anything to get off of your chest?
Why do dudes at the gym lift weights right in front of the dumbbell rack? MOVE.
If someone wants to work with you, how should they contact you?
Contact my manager: Vic Lopez at victorvic779@gmail.com
Any upcoming shows?
Very soon. In the process of scheduling and putting together a show. I don’t wanna just be on stage. I’d like to put something of real quality together.
